Vertical Thumbnails on Instagram

Have you noticed your new profile grid on Instagram?

Instagram has rolled out an update, replacing the classic square grid with vertically aligned thumbnails.

This change highlights the growing dominance of vertical content, aligning the platform more closely with the format popularised by Reels and TikTok.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri explained that the new layout better accommodates the vertical photos and videos most users now upload. For those who’ve carefully curated their grids, Instagram is developing tools to customise thumbnails and reorder content, easing the transition.

Mosseri also hinted that Highlights may move into the grid or become a separate tab, with additional control over profile personalisation coming soon.

While the update was flagged in advance, many users were still caught off guard by its sudden rollout.

With vertical content here to stay, it may be time to refresh your grid for Instagram’s next chapter!
