Meta’s new alternative to Twitter, currently known as ‘P92’ (formerly ‘Barcelona’), is nearing launch. According to reports, users will be able to sign on to the separate app with their Instagram account as well as sync up their follower list. The app is reported to be decentralised which means users on similar platforms like Mastodon will also be able to search and find your public profile.
Users will have a 500 character limit for posts and will be able to add links, photos and videos of up to 5 minutes in length.
This app has the potential to drive a significant change in the social media landscape - especially when you compare Instagram’s 1 billion plus daily active users to Twitter’s 253 million. The transferability of Instagram users to Barcelona could be attractive to those disillusioned with Musk’s Twitter takeover. We’ll be monitoring it over the weeks following launch
